  • About Me

    My name is John Zager,

I am a native of Duluth, Minnesota, a busy Great Lakes port city at the western tip of Lake Superior.  I honed my skills on my grandfather’s 1970s vintage SLR camera (an all manual Minolta SRT 202), capturing the ample scenery of northern Minnesota.  This included Lake Superior’s rugged shoreline and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness where my family has lake cabins.  These pristine and picturesque regions inspired me to learn how to creatively photograph the beauty that surrounds us.

In 2003, I moved to Tacoma, Washington, thirty minutes south of Seattle. This is where I developed my love for the mountains and the ocean, a combination for which the Pacific Northwest is world-renowned. This is a particularly special place for me as it is here that I met my wife.

In the summer of 2008, we moved to Durham, North Carolina where my wife attended graduate school at Duke University. In my time in North Carolina, I discovered the state’s awe-inspiring views, from the mountain ranges in the west to the coastline in the east. However, since Durham is landlocked in the Piedmont, the city helped me to expand my repertoire of subjects. I was steered away from the striking lakes and oceans to which I was accustomed in Minnesota and Washington, and I quickly fell in love with what it means to capture a city and its communities.

Today, my wife and I are back in the Pacific Northwest, enjoying life in Seattle.

    Mark and Aimee:

“My wife and I found John by a referral, and we are so lucky to have been able to work with him for photographing our wedding.  John is extremely friendly and easy to work with.  He truly went the extra mile to make sure that he knew ahead of time what shots we wanted and then he got all of the shots and people that we wanted to capture on our special day.  John was prompt, professional, and when we saw the shots we were very happy with the quality of his work.  We would highly recommend him to anyone and wish we had another event coming up so that we could use him again.  We had looked around and we could not have made a better decision in choosing John.”

“This fall we had the pleasure of working with John.  I was referred to his website by a classmate who passed on a CD portfolio of his work.  We were immediately impressed by his craftsmanship!  His portraits were casual but stunning and his landscapes showed an eye for great shots.  We booked him for engagement photos in the Sarah Duke Gardens and were very pleased with the results.  He was very flexible in arranging the meeting, professional in all communications, and well-prepared for the shoot. He was punctual and shared creative ideas while remaining receptive to our input and desires.  We climbed trees, fed ducks, and played with bamboo!  Not at all overbearing or pretentious, he was very comfortable to work with and even made us laugh. When we saw our photos we knew he would be a great photographer for our wedding.  He was willing to travel and his rates are reasonable.  His love for photography is exhibited both in his demeanor and his work.  We are very excited to work with him again this summer!”

    Annette and Natalie:

When we hired John to photograph my daughter, she was a little nervous at first.  But as soon as she met John, he immediately put her at ease.  He was able to capture her true personality throughout the shoot. entire family was amazed at the finished product.  Although we had seen his previous work and were obviously impressed, the results of the photo shoot definitely surpassed our expectations.  John provided more than enough ideas yet he was very flexible and open to ours as well.  I will definitely hire him again for any future photography needs, and I highly recommend him without reservation.  He provides the highest quality of artistic work at  prices that are well worth it.  If you have a special event that you want memorialized, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
